LEARNING PATH :: SIG

Telecom Signaling
Analyst

How operator networks signal calls, mobility and sessions, in the circuit-switched world and over IP. Three courses take you from the SS7/C7 network, its MTP, ISUP, SCCP, TCAP and MAP layers and how operators build it, to SIP, SDP and RTP, and end in the TelcoSec Telecom Signaling Analyst certification.

// PATH OVERVIEW

What this learning path covers

Signalling is the conversation between network nodes that sets up a call, finds a roaming subscriber or delivers a text message. This path covers the two signalling systems an analyst meets most often: SS7/C7, which still carries call control and mobility dialogues between operators, and SIP, which sets up voice and other sessions over IP.

Prerequisites

  • Telecom Fundamentals
  • PSTN Fundamentals
  • GSM Fundamentals

// COURSES IN THIS PATH

  1. 01 · SS7-101Professional

    SS7 Fundamentals

    How the common channel signalling network that sets up calls and carries database and mobility dialogues is built, layered and interconnected. You will learn how SS7/C7 moves messages reliably between exchanges, databases and mobile network nodes, from the signalling link up to ISUP, SCCP, TCAP, MAP and SIGTRAN.

    Intermediate13.5 hours
  2. 02 · SS7-201Professional

    SS7 Architecture

    How an operator designs, builds and runs an SS7/C7 signalling network, beyond naming its parts. You will plan point codes, mated STP pairs, link sets and global title translation, size links for real traffic, follow roaming, SMS and calls across two networks hop by hop, deploy SIGTRAN, compare interconnect models and diagnose a failing network from its traces.

    Intermediate13.5 hours
  3. 03 · SIP-101Professional

    SIP Fundamentals

    How calls and other sessions are set up, changed and ended over IP with the Session Initiation Protocol. You will learn how SIP, SDP and RTP work together, from user agents and proxies through registration, offer/answer and media to NAT traversal, interworking with the PSTN and SIP in the IMS for VoLTE and VoNR.

    Intermediate13.5 hours

// WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • Explain how common channel signalling separates call control from the voice path, and how an SS7/C7 network is built from signalling points, STPs and links
  • Follow a call through ISUP and a mobility dialogue through SCCP, TCAP and MAP, including global title translation
  • Describe how SIGTRAN carries SS7/C7 over IP in current interconnect networks
  • Explain how SIP, SDP and RTP set up, change and end a session through proxies, registrars and back-to-back user agents
  • Describe how SIP interworks with the PSTN and carries VoLTE and VoNR in the IMS

How the certification is earned

Passing the SS7 Fundamentals, SS7 Architecture and SIP Fundamentals final exams earns the TelcoSec Telecom Signaling Analyst certification. Completing every lesson in the path also earns the Signaling Authority achievement.

The certification needs all three final exams passed: 75 questions drawn from a bank of 150, with 70% needed to pass. Attempts are unlimited, with a 7-day wait between attempts. The module quizzes are practice and do not count.

Access and pricing

All 3 courses and the certificate are included in the Professional plan. Courses are taken on the TelcoSec platform after signing in.
